Brahms and Mahler face hope and loss in two very different ways—Brahms with his ravishing and intimate horn trio (featuring the principal horn of the Berlin Philharmonic, Stefan Dohr) and Mahler with a grand and epic work, essentially a symphony for two singers and orchestra, heard here in an arrangement for chamber orchestra of virtuoso players and two of the world’s finest singers, all led by maestro Alan Gilbert.
